July 2009 ~ The Scoop Newspaper, Tamworth, Ontario
As the Phoenix rises from the Ashes,,, Philoxia flies her colours again.
For the first time in fifteen years, Philoxia is opening its doors to the public. For many of you who are new to this area you may think, "Who or what is Philoxia?" For those of you who have lived in this area for fifteen years or more, this mention will bring to mind a few different images, experiences and tastes.
Philoxia was known to many people for its very unique animal haven which hosted everything from 'Lions and Tigers and a Bear,,, Oh My', onto a camel, wallabies, deer, llamas, wolves, ostrich, peacocks and a myriad of birds and smaller creatures. To others it brings back memories of a wood-fired bakery and three ornately decorated dining rooms which served gourmet vegetarian cuisine that satisfied the palate of even meat eaters. The Philoxians were also well known for their artistic endeavors of hundreds of signs around the country, as well as hundreds of homes and businesses.
Unfortunately, all of these activities ended 15 years ago when Philoxia experienced a massive fire which consumed their restaurant, bakery, resort/retreat center and their own home. After this, many visitors to Philoxia assumed that the Philoxians had simply gone away, when in fact they went into producing the one product which they were probably least known for in this area - Pheylonian Beeswax Candles.
Fifteen years after the fire, the Philoxians have grown a modest seasonal business into a company that exports, from the lil' town of Marlbank, to over 42 countries in the world. Pheylonian Beeswax Candles, as they are known globally, produce the most extensive variety of pure beeswax candles in the world. Their candles are made of 100% pure cappings beeswax with natural wicks. Beeswax is a truly amazing fuel, which emits no toxins, is non-allergenic and is the only fuel to emit negative ions when burning. The unique value of negative ions is their ability to remove dust, pollen, toxins, odours and even viruses from the air simply by burning a pure beeswax candle.
The opening of their Gift Shoppe is the first phase of Philoxia reopening to the public. This quaint shoppe showcases their full product line of candles along with certified organic honey, bee pollen and many unique gifts and household accessories. The store also feature the works of many other regional artisans, like wooden toys and bird houses, craft items, crystals, jewelry, along with a delightful variety of natural food treats and body care items. The Philoxians don't serve the delicious food they used to cook, but they are offering co-op pricing on ordering a wide variety of natural products, sprouts, beverages and healthful supplies. |
